BMW’s Formula One team has been crowned the champion of the 2020 World Championship in Barcelona.
The British manufacturer, which is backed by former British prime minister David Cameron, beat rivals McLaren, Ferrari and Renault-Nissan to the title by the narrowest of margins.
Its team was led by BMW M6 sports car and M8 sports car driver Sebastian Vettel.
“It’s been a great campaign by our team,” Vettel said.
“Our car and the way we’ve handled everything we’ve been able to do this season is a reflection of the fact that we have a good squad.”
We’re very confident we can do this.
I’ve been very lucky this season to have such a great team.
“The BMW M8 won the first race of the season in the European Le Mans Series and will go on to race in the world championship.
The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 is third and the BMW M3 is fourth.
The BMW team, which includes former Formula One driver Sebastian Seidl, has been in the championship for the past four years and was the top-ranked car in the season’s first race.
The team won the championship in 2016 and 2017 but has failed to qualify for the final.
